Shepherd

You who tell good news to Zion, go up on a high mountain. You who tell good news to Jerusalem, lift up your voice with strength. Lift it up. Don’t be afraid. Say to the cities of Judah, “Behold, your God!”  Behold, the Lord Yahweh will come as a mighty one, and his arm will rule for him. Behold, his reward is with him, and his recompense before him.  He will feed his flock like a shepherd. He will gather the lambs in his arm, and carry them in his bosom. He will gently lead those who have their young.  Isaiah 40:9-11

I will set up one shepherd over them, and he will feed them, even my servant David. He will feed them, and he will be their shepherd.  I, Yahweh, will be their God, and my servant David prince among them. I, Yahweh, have spoken it.  Ezekiel 34:23,24

The words of the wise are like goads; and like nails well fastened are words from the masters of assemblies, which are given from one shepherd. Ecclesiastes 12:11

But chose the tribe of Judah, Mount Zion which he loved.  He built his sanctuary like the heights, like the earth which he has established forever.  He also chose David his servant, and took him from the sheepfolds; from following the ewes that have their young, he brought him to be the shepherd of Jacob, his people, and Israel, his inheritance.  So he was their shepherd according to the integrity of his heart, and guided them by the skillfulness of his hands. Psalms 78:68-72

But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, being small among the clans of Judah, out of you one will come out to me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings out are from of old, from ancient times.  Therefore he will abandon them until the time that she who is in labor gives birth. Then the rest of his brothers will return to the children of Israel.  He shall stand, and shall shepherd in the strength of Yahweh, in the majesty of the name of Yahweh his God: and they will live, for then he will be great to the ends of the earth.  Micah 5:2-4

from the East

Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of King Herod, behold, wise men from the east came to Jerusalem, saying,  “Where is he who is born King of the Jews? For we saw his star in the east, and have come to worship him.”  When King Herod heard it, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him.  Gathering together all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he asked them where the Christ would be born.  They said to him, “In Bethlehem of Judea, for this is written through the prophet,  ‘You Bethlehem, land of Judah, are in no way least among the princes of Judah: for out of you shall come a governor, who shall shepherd my people, Israel.’”  Matthew 2:1-6

My Shepherd

Yahweh is my shepherd: I shall lack nothing.   He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters.  He restores my soul. He guides me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.  Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me. Your rod and your staff, they comfort me.  You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil. My cup runs over.  Surely goodness and loving kindness shall follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in Yahweh’s house forever. Psalm 23

I AM the Good Shepherd

“Most certainly, I tell you, one who doesn’t enter by the door into the sheep fold, but climbs up some other way, the same is a thief and a robber.  But one who enters in by the door is the shepherd of the sheep.  The gatekeeper opens the gate for him, and the sheep listen to his voice. He calls his own sheep by name, and leads them out.  Whenever he brings out his own sheep, he goes before them, and the sheep follow him, for they know his voice.  They will by no means follow a stranger, but will flee from him; for they don’t know the voice of strangers.”  Jesus spoke this parable to them, but they didn’t understand what he was telling them.  Jesus therefore said to them again, “Most certainly, I tell you, I am the sheep’s door.  All who came before me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep didn’t listen to them.  I am the door. If anyone enters in by me, he will be saved, and will go in and go out, and will find pasture.  The thief only comes to steal, kill, and destroy. I came that they may have life, and may have it abundantly.  I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.  He who is a hired hand, and not a shepherd, who doesn’t own the sheep, sees the wolf coming, leaves the sheep, and flees. The wolf snatches the sheep, and scatters them.  The hired hand flees because he is a hired hand, and doesn’t care for the sheep.  I am the good shepherd. I know my own, and I’m known by my own;  even as the Father knows me, and I know the Father. I lay down my life for the sheep.  I have other sheep, which are not of this fold. I must bring them also, and they will hear my voice. They will become one flock with one shepherd.  Therefore the Father loves me, because I lay down my life, that I may take it again.  No one takes it away from me, but I lay it down by myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. I received this commandment from my Father.”  John 10:1-18

Jesus answered them, “I told you, and you don’t believe. The works that I do in my Father’s name, these testify about me.  But you don’t believe, because you are not of my sheep, as I told you.  My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.  I give eternal life to them. They will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand.  My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all. No one is able to snatch them out of my Father’s hand.  I and the Father are one.”  John 10:25-30

Now may the God of peace, who brought again from the dead the great shepherd of the sheep with the blood of an eternal covenant, our Lord Jesus,  make you complete in every good work to do his will, working in you that which is well pleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be the glory forever and ever. Amen.  Hebrews 13:20,21

For you were going astray like sheep; but now have returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls. I Peter 2:25

When the chief Shepherd is revealed, you will receive the crown of glory that doesn’t fade away.  I Peter 5:4

24Elders

Hear us, Shepherd of Israel, you who lead Joseph like a flock, you who sit above the cherubim, shine out. Psalms 80:1

One of the elders answered, saying to me, “These who are arrayed in the white robes, who are they, and from where did they come?”  I told him, “My lord, you know.” He said to me, “These are those who came out of the great tribulation. They washed their robes, and made them white in the Lamb’s blood.  Therefore they are before the throne of God, they serve him day and night in his temple. He who sits on the throne will spread his tabernacle over them.  They will never be hungry, neither thirsty any more; neither will the sun beat on them, nor any heat; for the Lamb who is in the middle of the throne shepherds them, and leads them to springs of life-giving waters. And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.”  Revelation 7:13-17
